Loren was born on September 13, 1934 inJaffrey to his parents Malion and Germaine Blair. He graduated fromJaffrey High School and later enlisted in the US Navy. While in the Navy, he served as amachinist mate and traveled to Europe, South America, and the FarEast. Upon completing hisactive duty commitment, he served in the Naval Reserves until heretired in 1978. Lorenmarried Christine Wheeler on December 30, 1957. Together they raisedthree sons. KEENE– John Gerard Cornellier, 89, of Keene, formerly of Jaffrey, died peacefully in his sleep, on Monday morning, August 13, 2018, at his home in Keene. He was born on November 8, 1928, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Maxime J. and Regina B. (Frappier) Cornellier. Raised in Lowell, he attended a bi-lingual school through the eighth grade. Upon graduating from Boston College High School, with the Class of 1946, he entered the Jesuit Seminary. During the course of his seminary training he obtained a Master’s Degree from Weston College, an affiliate of Boston College. During his training he was assigned three years of missionary work at Baghdad College in Baghdad, Iraq, where he learned Arabic. Returning to the States, he continued his theological studies and was ordained in 1959. After his ordination, he was assigned to the faculty of Cheverus High School, in Portland, Maine as a teacher of French and was chairman of the language department. During this time he pursued further studies in French, obtaining a Master’s Degree in French from Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire In 1966 he was appointed Principal of the newly founded Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. After seeing to the graduation of the first four year graduates, he enrolled in Northeastern University to obtain a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies degree in Educational Administration. He obtained his CAGS and was hired as the Assistant Principal of Con Val High School in Peterborough in 1971. At that time he retired from his apostolic duties to take on this position and was later laicized by the Vatican. In 1973 he became the first building principal at the Memorial School in Rindge. After 17 years in this position, he retired to his home in Jaffrey. Later, in 2009, he moved to Keene to be closer to public transportation and the medical facilities that he needed at that time. Leisure moments were spent playing piano and doing all sorts of handyman chores around the house, especially woodworking items. He also developed a fondness for gardening and was especially proud of his tulips and Rose of Sharon. His parents, elder sister: Marie-Therese and a younger brother: Roger all died earlier. He is survived by distant relatives in California and Washington State, as well as by his many close friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2018, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. There will be no public calling hours. Burial will be private, at a later date, in the family plot at St. Joseph Cemetery in E. Chelmsford, MA. JAFFREY- Paul J. St. Pierre, 83 of Jaffrey, died Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Harris Hill Center in Concord, New Hampshire, following a period of failing health. He was born in Jaffrey on February 20, 1935, son of the late Noe and Leda M.J. (Letourneau) St. Pierre and was a lifelong resident of Jaffrey. He graduated from the Conant High School in 1953 and earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Keene Teacher’s College in 1960. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, first as an enlisted person with the 18th Rifle Co. of Manchester and was promoted to the rank sergeant in that unit. He later attained the rank of a 1st Lieutenant while serving on active duty as an artillery officer and naval air observer from 1960 to 1966 during which he served in the Caribbean during the Cuban missile crisis and in the Mediterranean Sea areas. He married Carolyn J. Sasner, the daughter of Edward and Bertha (Burgoyne) Sasner on Sept. 10, 1966. Paul and Carolyn had a loving 52 year marriage. He was employed as a police officer, mostly as a night patrolman, in the Jaffrey Police Dept. for nine years during the tenure of Chief Lucien Vigneault. He later was employed at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center as an industrial arts instructor and a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist for 37 years, retiring in 2003. He is the Genealogist for the Jaffrey Historical Society and has done genealogical research as a hobby for over 42 years. He was also an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and hiking with his black labs. Paul is survived by his wife Carolyn of Pleasant View Center, Concord, New Hampshire; their two sons Matthew of Port Orange, Florida; and Benjamin of Hopkinton, New Hampshire; and his granddaughter Kira Nicole St. Pierre of Orange City, Florida. GREENVILLE– Helen Mercier, 98, of Greenville died peacefully on August 8, 2018 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home surrounded by her loving nieces and good friends. Helen was born on March 9, 1920 in Greenville, a daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Labelle) Desrosiers. She was raised and educated in Greenville, and attended Appleton Academy. On September 2, 1946 she married Herbert Nutting and together they lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon Herbert’s untimely death, Helen returned to her family home in Greenville where she cared for her parents and welcomed the family to many outings and Memorial Day celebrations. In 1968 she married Eugene Mercier, moving to Leominster, Massachusetts. She and Gene loved to travel, especially their trip to Europe, and spending time at their camp in Westminster where they would enjoy many family gatherings. With Gene’s passing she again returned to Greenville and later moved to Florida. While in Florida she loved to swim, golf, entertain and go dancing with her companion, John Wert. She cared for John until he lost his battle with cancer. Helen worked as hairdresser while in North Carolina. She was a secretary/bookkeeper for Greenville Auto for many years. She was a patient account assistant at Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg until her retirement. She was known to all as “Aunt Helen”. When you met her she would touch your heart with her warm and caring ways. She gave so much care to her family and anyone who needed it. Her true purpose of life was to care for others. In her later years, having all learned from her wonderful example of love and caring, she was loved and cared for by family, friends and especially her niece, Mary. Helen was pre-deceased by her first husband, Herbert J. Nutting; her second husband, N. Eugene Mercier; and her companion John Wert. She was also pre-deceased by her brothers Emile, Charles and Henry Desrosiers and by her sisters Marie Beauchemin and Yvonne Bourgeois. Survivors include her stepson Jack (wife Mildred) Mercier, six stepchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and step-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Evelyn Rowell for many years of loving and caring for Helen and the wonderful medical staff of Good Shepherd Nursing Home for their love and compassionate care. VIRGINIA — Alan Lee Cooper, son of late Clinton George Cooper and Barbara Ann Park was born on October 7, 1955 in Somerville, Massachusetts. He served in the United States from 1977 to 1989 as a Corpsman. After being honorably discharged he went on to be a surgical technician. Alan retired from Good Samaritan Hospital in 2005 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was united in marriage to Dawn Alice Cooper (Duncan) from Pepperell, Massachusetts August14, 1993. Blessed with “man’s best friend” Dreyfus and two daughters from a previous marriage. Alan and Dawn resided in Chesapeake, Va. over the last decade. Mr. Cooper loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, boating, and camping. Spent many years with Dawn and his girls hiking, biking, and exploring flea markets. He was a remarkable craftsman, loved to build. His love for music is something to remember, hours upon, upon hours of playing the guitar and dancing in the living room with his family. His love for people and conversation was contagious, could find a friend anywhere. He was a diehard New England Patriots Fan. Alan quietly departed us Tuesday August 14, 2018 2:15 a.m. in Virginia. His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his daughters Georgia Anne Sansone and son in law John Sansone III, in Orange, CT. He worked at UNFI for several years, where his dedication and persistence paid off with multiple promotions in the company. He overcame many great adversities to become the hardworking family-man that his family remembers him by. DAVIDSON, NC – Nancy O. Merrifield, 87, passed away quietly after a brief battle with pneumonia on Saturday, August 11, 2018. Known for her strong New England roots, kindness for others and quick wit, Mrs. Merrifield is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Peter S. Merrifield. Peter and Nancy moved to Davidson, North Carolina in 2010, to be closer to family. Before moving to Davidson, Nancy and Peter lived in Antrim, for 38 years where they were active in local politics and Nancy was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of the James A. Tuttle Library. Nancy was known as a voracious reader and consumed thousands of books in her lifetime. She was also an avid antique enthusiast with New Hampshire memorabilia and cookbooks being her specialties. In life she would always say that loving and being loved by her family gave her the most joy. Born in Westerly, Rhode Island to John R. and Grace Hilton Oppy, Nancy had a younger brother, Robert, who also died of pneumonia, prior to the advent of antibiotics. Nancy’s father was the long-time owner of C.W. Willard Hardware Store in Westerly, which Peter and Nancy ran until they decided to retire in 1972 and move to New Hampshire. After attending the Lincoln School in Providence, Rhode Island, Nancy went on to graduate from Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts where she met Peter while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. Nancy is also survived by her sons, Mark Merrifield and his wife, Patricia, of Appleton, WI and Jeffrey Merrifield and his wife, Diana, of Davidson, NC. Peter and Nancy have seven grandchildren, Caroline Merrifield and her husband, Raghav Badrinath, Scott, Seth, Graham, Althea, Trevor and Abigail Merrifield. Legal Notice NOTIFICATION OF AQUATIC TREATMENT Contoocook Lake Rindge/Jaffrey, NH S Litude Lake Management, 590 Lake Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545, Telephone 508-865-1000, has been contracted by the Contoocook Lake Area Preservation Association to chemically treat portions of Contoocook Lake in Rindge/Jaffrey for control of non-native milfoil. Portions will be treated with the USEPA/State registered herbicide Procellacor EC (Florpyrauxifen-benzyl), EPA Registration Number 67690-80 on or about Monday, August 27, 2018, in accordance with Special Permit SP-207 issued by the NH Division of Pesticide Control. The following temporary water use restrictions will be imposed on the day of treatment: – No swimming for 24 hours following treatment, within 200 feet of treated areas. – Turf may be irrigated immediately after treatment. – Do not use this water for any residential or non-agricultural irrigation (such as shoreline property use for irrigation of residential landscape plants and homeowner gardens, golf course irrigation, and non-residential property irrigation around business or industrial properties) until further notice. Treated water shall not be used for greenhouse or nursery irrigation, until further notice. These restrictions apply to all intakes within 200 feet of the treatment area, and to all wells within 50 feet of shoreline that itself is within 200 feet of a treatment area.
